This Brazilian journalist, screenwriter, and illustrator is a master of visual storytelling who doesn’t need words to create a moving story that everyone will understand and feel. We have previously published Ademar Vieira’s emotional comics twice. We featured the artist’s work in a viral comic titled Choice, which shows what life looks like when deciding to have a dog versus not having one, and shared many of Vieira’s best comics that explore topics from pandemic to parenting. This time Vieira illustrated the real story of the adoption of a kitten, who at first did not think he needed, and dedicated it to all cat lovers under the name “Cat”. A soulful story shows how healthy life with a cat can be, and asks the question, who is saving whom? People save pets during the times when they need a loving home most, unaware that they are saving them.

When I lived alone, one day a kitten appeared at the door of my apartment. I started feeding her, but I didn’t want to adopt her. I expected one of the neighbors to adopt her, but this did not happen. Every time I got home, she was in front, expecting some milk and a hug. Until one day I arrived, and she was not at her usual place. Several days passed, and she was not seen. I was afraid that something terrible had happened to her, so when she reappeared, I adopted her. It was relief and joy.

Vieira said he never expected to be a parent of cats. When I was younger, I just couldn’t imagine having a cat as a pet. I lived alone and thought that my lifestyle would not allow me to have a cat. It turns out that she chose me anyway, However, after some time, he probably can no longer imagine that there is no cat next to him. We played a lot and I had fun watching her use the space in the house and try to have fun alone. Over time, I realized how much I care for her as if she were a family member.

We asked Vieira to tell us more about the cat he saved, which inspired us to create the comic: Gata-fera, which can be translated into English as“ Wildcat, has a very strong personality. She only gets affection when she wants to, and she is able to bite or scratch anyone who tries to hug her when she doesn’t want to be hugged. She spends most of the time in search of unusual places to sleep, loves to hunt and chase dogs in the house. On the other hand, she can be very nice when she wants to.
